R200 - Redundant
ring
Redundant ring provides the possibility to
connect an Ethernet network normally built in a star topology in ring,
providing redundant paths in the network. A normal Ethernet switch can
not be connected in a ring topology because broadcast and multicast
packets will be transmitted from switch to switch in the ring forever.
Mechanisms for handling all kinds of network faults is implemented in
each of the switches that form the ring, but one is in charge making
decisions and taking actions in order to keep the network up even if
parts of the network is out of order.
The graphical PC tool makes configuration easy. The ultra-fast topology
reconfiguration changes the topology in only 30ms, which is fastest on
the market today. Applications sensitive to network interruptions may
now perform without temporary loosing functions etc. An example is IP
telephony calls that are lost using yesterdays technology but using
OnTimes redundant ring switches the caller will not even notice a
network fault.
It is critical that the reconfiguration time is shorter than any
application timeout otherwise application may need to be restarted or
processes may fail. With only 30ms reconfiguration time many more
applications can operate reliable during reconfiguration.
Network links can be both single and multimode fiber links.
